What's new in PMBOK Guide 6th edition?
PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) guides project managers. This official book contains the practices required to improve the success of projects in all areas of project management. PMI is responsible for the continuous improvement of the PMBOK guide by incorporating new developments and standards in response to emerging situations in different industries and disciplines.
PMBOK's first edition was published in 1996. It is updated approximately every four years. The 2nd edition of PMBOK was published in 1996. In 2004, the 3rd edition was published. 2008 saw the publication of the 4th edition. 2012 saw the publication of the 5th edition. PMBOK Guide 5th edition is the current version. PMI plans to release the PMBOK 6th Edition during the third quarter of 2017. This edition includes significant changes based on current industry trends.
What's new in PMBOK 6th Edition?
- There are five process groups and ten knowledge areas. There has been no change to the previous version.
- PMBOK 6 will have 49 processes instead of the 47 found in PMBOK 5. The new PMBOK 6 will have 49 processes instead of 47 in PMBOK 5.
- "Human Resource Management" knowledge area has been changed to "Resource Management". Human resources include people, machinery, and material.
- The word "Monitor", in knowledge areas such as communication, risk management, and stakeholder engagement, is often used instead of "Control". The process of controlling risks is known as "Monitor Risks", while control communications are now called "Monitor Communications", and control stakeholder engagement is now called Monitor stakeholder engagement. Project managers can monitor these areas but will have limited control.
- Time Management was renamed to Schedule Management.
Alignment with Agile
PMI made sure that the PMBOK 6th Edition was aligned with Agile project management methods, as Agile project management is making significant inroads within the project management space. Each knowledge area in PMBOK 6th Edition will have a section entitled "Approaches to Agile iterative, adaptive Environments", which explains how Agile practices can be integrated with traditional project management.
Information about Agile and other iterative methods is also included in the PMBOK appendix. The PMI Talent Triangle, which combines technical, leadership, and business areas, was used to emphasize the importance of project management business documents.
This balanced approach focuses on the technical, leadership, and strategic aspects. PMI released the Exposure Draft in 2016 and sought public opinions. Following changes to the Exposure Draft of PMBOK 6 published in 2016 by PMI,
